a target="_blank" href="ijsland/autorondreizen/algemeen/index2.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=40&Itemid=496">Zwaarte: 2 Comfort: 5-6  !GEGARANDEERD VERTREK!

Melbourne en Great Ocean Road
We beginnen in de gezellige stad Melbourne, met zijn vele terrasjes, restaurants, eethuisjes en winkels. We verblijven hier 3 nachten.

DAY 4 – FLY MELBOURNE TO ALICE SPRINGS
Transfer from the hotel to Melbourne domestic airport. Fly Melbourne to Alice Springs. Upon arrival in Alice Springs transfer to your hotel. Afternoon Alice Springs Town Tour. This afternoon commence a tour of Alice Springs covering many interesting highlights, including the original waterhole - “The Alice Springs”, at the very historic Old Telegraph Station. This station was midway along the Overland Telegraph Line from Darwin to Adelaide and played a key role in Australia’s development.  Opened in 1872, the line reduced isolation of Australians from the rest of the world. Continue to the Royal Flying Doctor Service and learn how this marvellous facility operates to provide a “Mantle of Safety” to the people of the Outback.  The Royal Flying Doctor Service began in 1912 when the Reverend John Flynn went to the Outback as an inland missionary for the Presbyterian Church.  See how routine medical clinics are provided to isolated outback areas.

Call in at the “School of the Air” which broadcasts lessons to children living on remote outback stations.  Also take in a panoramic view of Alice Springs from Anzac Hill Lookout.  From the top, one can see over the modern Alice Springs town ship and beyond to the MacDonnell Ranges that form a southern boundary to the town. Overnight: Aurora Alice Springs

DAY 5 – ALICE SPRINGS TO KINGS CANYON
Enjoy breakfast at leisure in the hotel. We depart Alice Springs at 6.30am and travel to Kings Canyon via the Mereenie Loop. Tonight, try a traditional ‘camp oven’ dinner, cooked in the coals of the fire. Overnight: Kings Creek Station Campsite

DAY 6 – KINGS CANYON TO AYERS ROCK
This morning we visit the breathtaking Kings Canyon. There is no rush, as we hike around the canyon rim viewing sites like the “Lost City” and the “Garden of Eden”, as well as the striking North and South Walls. There are plenty of opportunities for photos. On arrival at Ayers Rock we visit the Olgas and enjoy a beautiful Uluru sunset. The world famous Uluru (Ayers Rock) is 3.6km long and rises a towering 348m from the surrounding sandy desert scrubland.  It is believed that two-thirds of the Rock lies beneath the sand.  The colour of the face of the Rock changes as the setting sun turns it a series of deeper and darker oranges, reds and purples before it fades into grey, a performance which is reversed at dawn.  This entire area is of deep cultural Significance to the local Anangu Aboriginal people and in their language the Rock is known as Uluru – the name also given to the national park that surrounds it. Overnight: Ayers Rock Campsite

* Please note that some activities within Australia’s national parks are dependent on weather and the observance of cultural traditions, therefore itineraries are subject to change.

DAY 7 – FLY AYERS ROCK TO CAIRNS
This morning we enjoy sunrise at Uluru (Ayers Rock), a World Heritage listed area. Join your knowledgeable guide for a base tour of Uluru, exploring ancient caves where Aboriginal paintings can be seen, learning about the oldest culture in the world. You will then be  transferred to Ayers Rock airport at midday for your flight to Cairns. A message from the Anangu people
Note:  Anangu, Uluru’s traditional owners, would prefer that visitors choose not to climb Uluru. Furthermore, the climb may be closed without notice due to weather or cultural reasons. Fly Ayers Rock to Cairns. Upon arrival in Cairns you will be transferred to your hotel. Overnight: Hotel Cairns

DAY 8 – FULL DAY DAINTREE WANDERER
Departing your accommodation we travel through the rich farming areas toward the World Heritage Listed forest region of the Daintree National Park. We step aboard our own personalised craft for a cruise on the mirrored  smooth waters of the Daintree River. We cruise close to riverbanks and under the overhead canopy of the rainforest seeking out the vivid Ulysses Butterfly, Kingfishers and various other wildlife. The cruise takes us through silent backwaters where crocodiles can normally be seen basking on the muddy banks.

Arriving on the northern side of the river we now enter the Daintree section of  the Wet Tropics World Heritage protected rainforest. Our journey takes up the beautiful Alexandra Range passing through rainforest and on to our first stop for home style morning tea deep in the rainforest at the Jindalba boardwalk. Jindalba (the aboriginal name for this place) is also where we literally immerse
you inside our protected forests and take you on a guided walk where we view plants of ancient linage right through to examples of our more recent relatively speaking of course) species of flowering plants. The sounds of various birdlife sing along as we stroll. You may even hear the Wompoo fruit doves with their distinctive "Womp pooooo" call. To tease you more, there is the possibility of seeing the elusive and brightly coloured Southern Cassowary (A primitive and sadly, endangered species of flightless bird, standing up to an impressive (1.8m/5ft high). Fallen fruit and fruit on low branches is the mainstay of its diet.

Continuing along we then stop at the magical Thornton Beach. Here our guides will highlight the amazing wildlife and ecosystems unique to this part of the world – “where the rainforest meets the sea”. Usually we are one the only people on this stretch of wilderness beach if not the only people. Many who have travelled remark how they feel like Robinson Cruso. This is also where Cooper Creek, that has started its life on Thornton's Peak, passing through forest which scientists refer to as an ancient "refugium" (dating back around 120 millions years) and finally meeting up with the Coral Sea.

Lunch is a special treat today, deep under the Rainforest canopy. We enjoy a delicious lunch of tropical rainforest-inspired local produce. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy quality food, whilst bathed in the serenity of the Tropical Rainforests. We have the chance for a private rainforest walk here as well, and may possibly spot rainforest lizards, birds, butterflies and perhaps even marsupials! This is also your opportunity to immerse yourself in the fresh, clear, rainforest creek. Surely this is a once in a lifetime experience.

After lunch we get to see unusual, exotic fruit originating from all over the globe's tropical regions. Along with the fruit trees the orchid is also a host to beautiful species of tropical flowering plants, both native and introduced. The sole purpose for the fruit grown at this orchard is to make pure, fresh, ice cream which is made on the property and sold no where else on the globe. For all those ice cream lovers this is your chance to add to your list of flavours (optional extra)

Our last stop and final lasting impression will be at the outstanding panoramic picture postcard view at Alexandra Range Lookout. From here you'll have a spectacular view of the mouth of the Daintree River, Snapper Island and on a clear day Port Douglas.

One final treat for the day is the crossing on the Daintree River Ferry – the iconic vehicle punt which transfers you out of the world heritage rainforest and on to your home-ward road. You will be back at your accommodation early in the evening. Overnight: Hotel Cairns

DAY 9 – CAIRNS TO UNDARA
Scenic drive from Cairns, Undara is the experience that defines Australia’s Outback. You’ve heard it said “You have to get lost to find yourself” – this is where you’ll find the sense of place you’re seeking.  Located on the eastern edge of the ruggedly beautiful Gulf Savannah region of northern Australia, the Undara Experience captures the essence of the real Australian Outback. Undara is as ancient and alluring as the continent itself, the Undara Lava Tubes stand as silent sentinels to our pre-history. Here you can walk in the path of a volcano and sleep cocooned in an antique railway carriage as your dreams connect you with the essence of this timeless land.

It’s a place where you can explore natural geological wonders, enjoy the comforts and hospitality of a unique outback setting and where the local wildlife are as abundant as they are at home in their surroundings. In short, Undara needs to be experienced! Enjoy lunch on arrival. After lunch join your Savannah Guide for a Volcano Valley tour (1/2 day), where they will share their extensive knowledge of this fascinating area. Enjoy a delicious dinner. Overnight: Undara Experience – Carriage accommodation.

DAY 10 – UNDARA TO TOWNSVILLE
Enjoy bush breakfast at leisure. Depart Undara today and head east back to the Kennedy Highway. We turn right and travel back through Mount Garnet, Innot Hot Springs and onto Milla Milla and travel east on the Palmerston Highway to meet up with the Bruce Highway. Innisfail vies with other regional areas for the title of the wettest town in Australia, so it is no surprise to find the area a brilliant green.  Like many of the towns between Townsville and Cairns, Innisfail has a fascinating multiculturalism that may be very different to most other parts of Australia.  Take the time to walk the streets and visit the shops. We depart Innisfail and travel south via Cardwell and Ingham to Townsville.

Set between rugged coastal hills and the Coral Sea, Townsville is a thriving and progressive city that is unofficially named the “Capital of North Queensland”. Wrought iron still brightens splendid historic buildings, brilliant bougainvillea frames vistas of green lawns and palm trees and shady old homes guarded by lush mango trees survive in near pristine condition. It is a significant centre for research, education, government, business and industry. It also processes much of the nation’s mineral wealth - copper, nickel and zinc.

The ‘Strand’ is Townsville’s fantastic beachfront promenade, with restaurants, cafes, a water park and picnic areas. Visit the aquarium or take a drive up the winding road to Castle Hill for spectacular views of the city. You can also visit Magnetic Island, if time permits, which is only a 20 minute ferry ride away. Overnight: Mercure Inn Townsville.

The 87 kilometres from Townsville to Ayr are full of interest. The Burdekin River is the envy of many visitors and is part of Queensland’s largest irrigation development. The twin towns of Ayr and Home Hill straddle the river, while the lower Burdekin abounds in a large variety of bird life. We continue south towards Proserpine and amidst lush rainforest, 74 tropical islands and the Great Barrier Reef, is one of Australia’s favourite aquatic playgrounds – the Whitsunday’s. Proserpine is a small sugar town on the coast close to the Whitsunday’s. A folk museum displays fashions and furnishings worn and used by the district’s pioneers and a wildlife sanctuary displaying crocodiles, cassowaries, a reptile house and a walk-through aviary. The islands of the Whitsunday Passage can be seen from Conway National Park, noted for its butterflies and breathtaking views. From Proserpine, we make our way to Airlie Beach, centre of the Whitsunday Coast and departure point for many of the Whitsunday Islands. DAY 13 – AIRLIE BEACH TO ROCKHAMPTON
We depart Airlie Beach and return to the Bruce Highway before travelling south to Mackay, a vibrant exciting tropical city booming from the richness of sugar and mining. Mackay was settled in 1862, named after Captain John Mackay who discovered the valley of the Pioneer River.  Early pioneers brought sugar cane to the region and began an industry that has become one of Australia’s largest.  Within a decade of settlement, Mackay became Queensland’s largest sugar producing area - and still is! Its abundance of lush rainforest, access to the amazing Great Barrier Reef, beautiful islands and coastline is why Mackay is known as ‘The Natural North’.

We travel through towns such as Sarina, Carmila, Clairview, Marlborough and Yaamba to arrive at Rockhampton. Rockhampton is situated on the Tropic of Capricorn and is where the outback meets the Great Barrier Reef.  The town is also proudly known as the beef capital of Australia. The best way to re-live the Rockhampton of yesteryear is to discover the Heritage Drive or, for the more energetic, the Heritage Walk.  Both routes take in the grand old architecture of Rockhampton, which has been lovingly preserved and restored. The city’s lifeline in the early days of settlement was the Fitzroy River. Quay Street, which runs by the river and is part of the Central Business District, is part of the Heritage Route. Overnight: Travelodge

DAY 14 – ROCKHAMPTON TO HERVEY BAY – FRASER ISLAND
We depart Rockhampton and rejoin the Bruce Highway and continue south. Rockhampton is situated on the Tropic of Capricorn and is where the outback meets the reef. The town is also proudly known as the beef capital of Australia. Hervey Bay has been holiday playground since its earliest days.  The superb climate, relaxed lifestyle, beautiful calm beaches, and a host of interesting land and water based activities makes Hervey Bay and popular holiday destination. Between July and November Hervey Bay is the premier whale watching venue in the country, when Humpback Whales visit to frolic in the warm shallow waters of the Bay. Just offshore lies Fraser Island.  Fraser Island is World Heritage Listed and the world’s largest sand-massed island - accessible for the most part by 4WD.  The island offers walking tracks, fresh water lakes, long surf beaches, sand dunes, coloured cliffs, rainforest and around 230 species of birds and 25 species of mammals.

We transfer to the Marina at River Heads to meet the catamaran to Kingfisher Bay Resort, Fraser Island. Afternoon is at leisure to explore the resort. Join the ranger-guided walks and talks, try your luck at fishing or just relax by the pool. Each evening the resort offers ranger-guided activities, for example spotlighting tours to see the fascinating nocturnal wild life or study the stars of the Southern sky or attend a talk and slide show about Fraser Island’s dingoes, which are among the purest on the East Coast of Australia. Overnight: Kingfisher Bay Resort.

DAY 15 – FRASER ISLAND
Join a full day 4WD tour of Fraser Island. Come and see Fraser Island's awesome natural sights! Paddle in the crystal clear blue water of Lake McKenzie as it laps pure white sandy shores. Visit the lush rainforest at Central Station and the renowned Wanggoolba Creek with its rare King Ferns. You will marvel at the tall satinay trees of Pile Valley.
Stop for a wander around the boardwalks at Eli Creek and witness enormous volumes of cool fresh water running out to sea.
